Tortoise’s Origin Discovered
See Clarence at Feast for the Beasts Nov. 22-23
America's Teaching Zoo recently learned that it's 82-year-old Galapagos tortoise, Clarence, was one of 100 collected during a heroic expedition to save the endangered species in 1928. A member of the Houston Zoo provided Moorpark with a copy of a 1928 New York Times article about the expedition led by Dr. C.H. Townsend director of the New York Aquarium. The tortoises were distributed to zoos in California, Texas, Arizona and Florida in 1928.
Clarence, along with some 150 other exotic animals, can be seen every weekend and at the zoo’s upcoming Thanksgiving event called Feast for the Beasts November 22 and 23 from 11 am to 5 pm.
