Moorpark College Gallery, Miriam Nöske, Metropolitan Times, September 6- September 26, 2010; Artist's Lecture to be held September 22 from 3:00-3:45 p.m. in Fountain Hall 115. Miriam Nöske’s paintings examine the ever-changing metropolitan landscapes of Los Angeles and New York City that are interspersed with media images, advertisement and supergraphics among high rising modern architecture. By drawing imagery from popular culture, advertisements, and art history and combining them in her grid-like urban environments and structures, she explores the visual signifiers that distinguish contemporary localities and urban life style. Shifting between rendered images and abstract color fields, her work examines the parallels that exist between representation and the non-objective, and the visual narratives that form our cultural memory.
Miriam Nöske received her MFA in Fine Art from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Studio Art from the University of Fine Arts Berlin, Germany. She completed part of her undergraduate studies at Chelsea College of Art & Design in London, UK, and was the recipient of the Erasmus scholarship for a four-month study program at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria, in 1999. Her artwork has been shown internationally and was included in selected group exhibitions at Mandarin Gallery (Los Angeles), King Mongkut‘s Institute of Technology (Bangkok), Museum für Photographie (Braunschweig, Germany), Neue Galerie (Berlin), Semperdepot (Vienna), and Overlook Park Shorts Film Festival (Cleveland). Recent solo exhibitions include Double Feature at Kristi Engle Gallery (Los Angeles 2010) and Reflecting City at Sea and Space Explorations (Los Angeles 2008).
