The Theatre Arts Department will stage the controversial and classic Greek comedy “Lysistrata” March 19- April 5 on the Main Stage of the Performing Arts Center. Lysistrata tells the story of the women of Greece who take an oath to withhold sexual contact until the men stop the wars. Director John Loprieno calls it, “a classical masterpiece bursting with sexual hijinx and slapstick comedy, that packs a punch with political and social satire.”
Loprieno found a contemporary translation of Aristophanes 4th century BC play that he hopes will easily convey to a modern audience the stinging satire that Aristophanes intended. “You’ll be surprised how many of his comments on sexual and governmental politics still hold up,” he says.
