Dear Colleagues and Friends:
Final results of Proposition 30 are in! The citizens of California renewed their faith in public higher education, and approved Prop 30.
For our District and for Moorpark College, the voters’ decisions translate into a flat budget for us in FY14. Specifically, these are the key points of impact:
No Mid-Year Triggers Cuts for FY13 (current academic year)
Prop 30 funds the current budget. There will be no reductions in the Spring schedule, personnel, and operations.
Districtwide Budget in FY14
While there will be no drastic budget reductions, there is no “new” money for the restoration of classes, personnel, or operations cut during prior years. We will absorb any cost increases, such as, “step-and-column” adjustments, and health and welfare benefits internally. Since these items are largely determined through collective bargaining, the actual costs will not be known until later in the academic year.
The College will continue to monitor and develop strategies to stay ahead of these changes. I strongly believe that, despite the reductions we sustained, we have preserved the core of teaching and learning at Moorpark College. It is that core, and our core beliefs in the value of education, that will keep our institution a vibrant and critical resource for our community. As a community of learners, and the last bastion of democracy in education, our College will continue to endure and excel.
Let’s come together, and take care of our students.
My warm regards,
Pam Y. Eddinger, Ph.D.
President
Moorpark College
