BAT BOY: THE MUSICAL, described by the press as an “off-Broadway sensation,”— “a cult hit” –opens at Moorpark College October 24. “Bat-Boy: The Musical” is your classic love story with a serious bite. In 2001 it was named the best Off-Broadway musical, winning both the Lucille Lortel Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award. It has earned virtually unanimous rave reviews: "instant classic" New York Post ; "a giggling cult hit" The New Yorker, “darkly funny, curiously touching” London Times. Recently, well-known film-maker, John Landis, of “National Lampoon’s Animal House” and “American Werewolf . . .” fame was so impressed after seeing the show that he immediately agreed to develop and direct a movie based on the musical.
The plot centers on the present day discovery of a mysterious half bat, half boy found deep in a cave near the fictional town of Hope Falls, West Virginia. Writers Keythe Farley, Brian Flemming and composer/lyricist, Laurence O’Keefe were inspired by “Bat-Boy”stories ripped from the headlines of “Weekly World News”, a farcical tabloid. The first production of the show premiered in Los Angeles at Tim Robbins’ Actors’ Gang Theatre, on Halloween in 1997.
“The show is an exploration of the limits of dark humor,” says director, Kathy Lewis. Being born half bat presents some problems to our hero when he tries to find his pointy-eared place in a world that wants to shun him. “Would you let your daughter go out with him ?” The story centers on Bat-Boy’s search for he who is, and where he came from. He is driven by the desire to love and be loved, as he struggles with the “beast within”. Vocal Director, Marilyn Anderson sums it up: “Bat-Boy: The Musical” manages to be both profoundly funny and extremely moving and the music is just wonderful !” Come join the Halloween celebration with Bat-Boy at Moorpark College !
