| To help raise funds and awareness for National Breast Cancer Month, Moorpark College will host its annual “Dig Pink” Women’s Volleyball game on October 19 at 7 p.m. Cancer touches almost everyone in some way. Before and throughout the game, there will be methods by which attendees can honor people in their lives that either survived or succumbed to cancer. Special “Dig Pink” t-shirts will be on sale. All funds raised will go to the Sideout Foundation, originators of the nationwide Dig Pink campaign. Last year, the event raised more than $300. New treatments have brought about recoveries that formerly would have resulted in death. Advances have led to thousands of full recoveries and survivors leading full lives after a cancer diagnosis. One such person is Moorpark College Sophomore Erika Smith, Libero on the Women’s Volleyball Team, who was diagnosed at 8-years old with Leukemia and underwent 2 ½ years of intensive chemotherapy and several blood transfusions. During this process, she lost her hair three times, which was a traumatic event for a young girl. But, she stayed strong throughout it all and has been cancer free for more than 10 years. Erika is an excellent scholar athlete and plans to attend Cal Lutheran University to pursue her degree in Liberal Arts. After graduation, she desires to become an elementary school teacher, and we wish her the best of luck. The Moorpark College Athletic Staff, and especially Erika, invite you to join us for our “Dig Pink” Volleyball game to show your support for finding the cure. |
