Moorpark College is proud to announce the Summer Theatre Arts production of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” to be performed July 21-August 7 at Moorpark College, with three additional performances August 26-28 in the new Performing Arts building at Oxnard College. This inaugural performing arts collaboration between Moorpark and Oxnard colleges promises fun-filled musical comedy entertainment that will serve the communities of both colleges.
“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” is a comic masterpiece and Broadway mainstay that offers unique challenges for students. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a hilarious book written by Larry Gelbart, the audience is transported back to ancient Rome to experience comic twists and turns that are sure to brighten any summer evening. The plays tells the story of Psuedolus, a crafty Roman slave, who must use every ounce of his charm, wit, and nerve to secure the love of Philia for his ardent young master, Hero, with humorous results.
Mounting a play at the home campus of Moorpark College and moving to its sister college, Oxnard, presents many challenges. “Paulette Cox, our Theatre Manager and Scenic Designer, has once again designed an incredible set on which our students will perform,” said John Loprieno, Theatre Arts Chair and Director. “She designed it with the move in mind. All our students, technical and performers alike, are very excited about moving the show and meeting the unique challenges of adapting to a new venue. While there are many professional jobs like this, students rarely get the opportunity to experience touring a full production in a college setting. A huge undertaking such as this only happens with full support of the Ventura County Community College District Governing Board and the Presidents on each campus -- and the students on both campuses are very appreciative of this collective commitment to the arts.”
“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” will be performed in the Studio Theatre at Moorpark College on July 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, 30 and August 4, 5, 6 at 8 p.m., with Sunday matinees on July 24, 31 and August 7 at 2 p.m. Moorpark College is located at 7075 Campus Road in Moorpark, CA. The three performances at Oxnard College will be on Friday and Saturday, August 26, 27 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, August 28, at 4 p.m. in the Oxnard College Performing Arts Studio/Black Box Theatre located at 4000 South Rose Avenue in Oxnard, CA.
