Cleaner Air, Reduced Fire Threat Prompts Animals' Return to Moorpark Zoo
According to America's Teaching Zoo spokesperson Holly Tumas, 120 animals are being returned today from their evacuation site at the Camarillo Animal Shelter.
This gives zoo staff and students just enough time to get ready for the BOO AT THE ZOO Halloween Festivities that begin on Saturday at 11 am.
Due to poor air quality and a threat from fires burning in Los Angeles County northeast of the college, a massive evacuation took place
from about 7:30 pm Monday night to 1:30 am Tuesday morning.
Eight staff and almost 100 students, two veterinarians and numerous volunteers evacuated all but the lion, tiger, hyenas , mountain lions and Schmoo the sea lion.
The animals were cared for off-campus by staff and students. There was also a crew at the zoo caring for the remaining animals.
All the endangered Palos Verdes blue pupae were moved to a safe location out of the weather as of Sunday, when the wind storm started.
There is no firm date yet for their return.
Details of this weekend's BOO AT THE ZOO event include games for children; a banana-eating contest with the Olive Baboon "Rosie";
a mini pumpkin patch; and a drawing to win a painting by one of the zoo's animals!
Tickets will be sold at the gate, Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 5pm.
Admission is $5 for Adults, $4 for Children & Seniors.
The zoo is located at Moorpark College, 7075 Campus Rd, Moorpark, which is just off the 118 freeway, Collins Drive exit.
