The staff of the Ventura County Community College District’s Student Voic newsmedia has a successful showing at this year’s Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) conference this weekend in Sacramento, Calif., taking home 11 on-the-spot awards. Competing against more than 50 schools, staff members won across the board in categories including multimedia, writing and photo Journalism.
The Student Voice covers Moorpark, Ventura and Oxnard Colleges with online and print editions. The news operation is advised by Journalism instructor Joanna Miller. Miller took 20 students to the annual JACC conference where they participated in workshops and competitions to help hone their journalism skills.
Randy Phenning, 19, photo editor for the Student Voice, wasn’t in it just to win, but took home an award for Honorable Mention in Sports Photography. “I really didn't care about winning, though it was cool to win for the school and my teammates,” said Phenning.
Editor Sean Greene, 19, was proud of his staff for the hard work they put into the paper this semester, and noted that it paid off at the conference.“I was happy to see a lot of our individual staff members place in their competitions,” said Greene.
Christian Randolph, 18, shoots photos for the Student Voice at Ventura College. “Winning awards for the JACC on-the-spot competitions is always cool because in a way it recognizes all the work that I put into the Student Voice and journalism in general over the semester,” said Randolph.
