Moorpark, Ca - Moorpark College’s Performing Arts Department is pleased to announce the cast of “Laughter on the 23 rd Floor” by Neil Simon to be performed February 14 – 27 at the Moorpark College Performing Arts Center. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Neil Simon explores his early writing for television in the smash comedy “Laughter on the 23rd Floor”. This Broadway hit pays homage to the author’s early days in show biz when he worked as a junior jokesmith for Sid Caesar’s “Your Show of Shows”. He was stuck in a room with a bunch of the looniest comedy writers ever, who grew up to be Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner and others. As the writers in the play try to top each other with gags while competing for the attention of head madman Max Prince, Max must contend with NBC brass who fear that his humor is too sophisticated for middle America .
Playing the flamboyant role of television star and resident crazy person, “Max Prince” is :placeNewberry Park resident, David Sanford. :placeThousand Oaks resident, Will Cranmer will be playing the role of “Lucas,” the voice of a young and hopeful Neil Simon. The rest of the cast includes: Nick Fritsch, Ray Hebel, Ryan Lameroux and Sebastian Kittle of Moorpark, Nichole Blackburn of Newbury Park, Brook Fiss of Los Angeles, Alex Janckila of Ventura, Melissa Pinza and David Wright of Simi Valley and Silena Smith-Shamey of Agoura Hills.
“I saw this on Broadway when I was living in New York and I knew that I had to direct it someday,” said director John Loprieno, full-time Theatre Arts instructor at Moorpark College . “Many of the cast members are from our on-going Improv comedy company. I’m finding that the High Schools in the area are developing tremendous comedic talent and I think that Moorpark College has found ways to nurture that talent and give it a place to thrive and grow. And what better vehicle for comedy than a Neil Simon play?” As this is one of Neil Simon’s later works, not only does it contain hilarious physical comedy and outlandish situations, but it also tackles serious themes with colorful and often adult language. Of “Laughter on the 23 rd Floor,” Variety said; “The funniest comedy on Broadway in years and likely to remain the funniest comedy on Broadway for years to come.”
