MOORPARK COLLEGE PRESENTS SHAKESPEARE’S CLASSIC “HENRY IV PARTS I & II”
Moorpark College Theatre Arts is proud to announce a special presentation of two of William Shakespeare’s most enduring historical masterpieces, “Henry IV Parts I & II,” to be presented in repertory March 28-April 13, 2013. This rare production of these sequential plays will showcase epic storytelling by the master of classic drama, William Shakespeare. Each play will be performed in 90 minutes without intermission.
Henry IV Parts I and II are set in early fifteenth-century England during the reign of King Henry IV and follow the adventures of young Prince Hal, son of Henry IV, as he learns what it means to be a king. While his father’s problems mount, Hal shows no interest in princely matters and spends his time in London taverns with disreputable companions. These classic characters still challenge and inspire as they have served as the inspiration for many tales throughout the ages through the universal theme of a son struggling to live up to his father’s legacy and expectations. From bar room brawls to war presented on stage, the action never stops. In two tales of war, political intrigue, drunken debauchery, and coming of age, Moorpark College will be transporting audiences back to the Globe Theatre in Elizabethan England as Prince Hal proves himself worthy of his father’s trust as he ascends to the throne of England.
"We are very excited about presenting this dual production. While Shakespeare is widely accepted as being the greatest writer in English literature, people often forget the epic nature of his work in the creation of a dramatic narrative that spans as many as eight plays. Many students are playing the same roles in both shows, and there is a feeling of being in a sequel," said Theatre Arts, Department Chair, John Loprieno. "We chose to do a large showcase production to let the community see the depth of experience and talent in the Moorpark College Theatre Arts program. We also see this as a wonderful outreach opportunity for local high schools and other students. The plays have sword fights, long comic sequences, romance, and political intrigue. There’s something for everyone."
Henry IV Part I will be presented March 28, April 4, and April 11 at 8 p.m. Henry IV Part II will be presented March 29, April 5, and April 12 at 8 p.m. Both plays will be presented on March 30, April 6, and April 13, with Henry IV Part I being presented at 4 p.m. and Henry IV Part II being presented 8 p.m. Tickets range from $10 for students, seniors, and staff to $15 for adults.
