Schmoo the Sea Lion Passes Away after 30 Years of Service at the Moorpark College Exotic Animal Training and Management Program
After 30 years of faithful service to the Exotic Animal Training and Management Program at Moorpark College (EATM), Schmoo, the sea lion, passed away today. She died from age related complications.
Schmoo was acquired by EATM in 1981 as part of the animal collection in support of the two-year training program at Moorpark College. During her years of service to the program, Schmoo was instrumental in the teaching of college students preparing for a career in animal training and management, as well as grade school children who enjoyed her energetic performances. Schmoo, through her trainers, promoted the understanding of animal conservation and the importance of the preservation of natural habitats. Many students were drawn to the program for the opportunity to work with Schmoo. Thousands of students and community members were touched by the presence of Schmoo over the years.
The EATM program was established at Moorpark College in 1974 and is the only program of its kind in the United States. The animal collection, devoted exclusively for training the students, numbers 135. The zoo is open to the public and serves as a teaching and recreational resource for Moorpark and its adjacent communities.
