The University of La Verne and Moorpark College are offering an innovative program that will allow students to complete one of three bachelor’s degrees without ever having to leave the Moorpark campus.
Through the newly established University of La Verne at Moorpark College program, ULV will offer bachelor’s degree completion at Moorpark College. Students will be able to attain degrees in three majors – Business Administration, Child Development, and Liberal Studies – while doing all the necessary coursework at Moorpark. Upon successful completion, students will receive a bachelor’s degree from ULV.
“By having the chance to complete one of three bachelor’s degrees on the Moorpark College campus, community college students can have many of the same educational opportunities that traditionally were available only to students at four-year colleges and universities,” said Kevin Laack, associate director of admissions at ULV’s Ventura County Campus.
Designed for working students or those desiring accelerated degree completion on a flexible schedule, University of La Verne at Moorpark College courses will be offered evenings and/or on weekends in an accelerated semester calendar. The program will effectively complement Moorpark College’s PACE (Program for Accelerated College Education) program, which provides working students the opportunity to complete an associate’s degree in an accelerated evening/weekend format. These busy students now have the opportunity to take the next step and work toward a bachelor’s degree at a time and place convenient for them.
Moorpark College features a diverse student body, welcoming large numbers of students from varied age groups and personal circumstances. Many students work full-time, have ties to the geographic region, and/or have families or other personal commitments that may restrict their ability to transfer from Moorpark College to a four-year institution. The University of La Verne at Moorpark College is a viable option for all those seeking to achieve their higher educational goals.
“Unlike other institutions, the University of La Verne has the capacity to bring the university to the student so we do not have to ask the student to come to the university,” said Stephen Lesniak, dean of ULV’s Regional Campus Administration. “This model appeals to busy students who have ties to a given geographic area and, therefore, cannot always attend classes at one of our campuses.”
Students who take part in the University of La Verne at Moorpark College program will enjoy a streamlined transfer and admission process, opportunity for concurrent enrollment, financial aid, one-on-one admission and academic advising provided on-site by ULV counselors, and a wealth of other ULV academic and student services. The students will be required to complete only 44 upper-division (i.e., junior- and senior-level) units through ULV, and may meet all other requirements by completing lower-division classes through Moorpark College. The program will be taught and administered by the faculty and staff of the ULV Ventura County Campus in Oxnard, supported by the university’s main campus in La Verne.
Students interested in the program should contact Kevin Laack at (805) 981-8030 ext. 223. Applications are already being accepted with the first classes scheduled to begin in June 2008.
This program mirrors similar ones that ULV has established at other California Community Colleges, including College of the Canyons, Rio Hondo College, Allan Hancock College, Porterville College, and Cuesta College.
Founded in 1891, the University of La Verne is a non-profit, private university accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) serving more than 8,000 students. In addition to its main campus in La Verne, ULV maintains seven regional campuses, two military centers, an online division, and satellite class locations throughout California, providing a statewide network of educational offerings designed especially for busy adults.
Founded in 1967, Moorpark College is the largest of three colleges in the Ventura County Community College District. Fulltime enrollment is 14,500. The college offers day, evening, weekend and distance education classes in about 75 disciplines year-round. Admission is open to anyone aged 18 years and older, regardless of educational background. Students who have not yet graduated high school or are home schooled may attend as “Special Admission” students. Moorpark is also accredited by WASC.
