MOORPARK COLLEGE CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER PROGRAM EARNS NATIONAL NAEYC ACCREDITATION
The Moorpark College Child Development Center (CDC) program has earned accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) – the nation’s leading organization of early childhood professionals. To earn NAEYC Accreditation, the CDC went through an extensive self-study process, measuring the program and its services against the ten NAEYC Early Childhood Program Standards and more than 400 related Accreditation Criteria. The program received NAEYC Accreditation after an onsite visit by NAEYC Assessors to ensure the program meets each of the ten program standards. NAEYC-accredited programs are also subject to unannounced visits during their accreditation, which lasts for five years.
“We’re proud to be recognized for our commitment to achieving the highest professional standards in early childhood education,” said Cynthia Sheaks-McGowan, Director of the CDC. “NAEYC Accreditation lets families in the community know children in our program are getting the best care and early learning experiences possible.”
The CDC program offers exemplary early care and education experience for children aged two through five years. The program enhances children’s intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development. Half-day morning and afternoon program options are available for students, staff, and community families, as well as a parent-toddler program for 18-30 month olds. The CDC is located on campus and is licensed by the State of California for childcare needs while providing a laboratory experience for students majoring in Child Development. Central to the College Mission in four-year university transfer and career education, the CDC serves as an internship and observation site for degree-seeking students in the Child Development program.
The CDC currently serves 117 children in the preschool and parent-toddler classes and is a practicum and observation site for 357 enrolled Child Development majors, as well as for students from other campus departments such as Sociology, Psychology, and Natural Science. The CDC is open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and Friday 8 a.m.-1 p.m. The laboratory provides flexible hours for students to complete practicum and observation work around their work and school schedules.
In the 25 years since NAEYC Accreditation was established, it has become a widely recognized sign of high-quality early childhood education. More than 7,000 programs are currently accredited by NAEYC, which is approximately eight percent of all preschools and other early childhood programs. The new standards today reflect the latest research and best practices in early childhood education and development. For more information about NAEYC Accreditation, visit www.naeyc.org/academy.
