MC THEATRE ARTS FEATURES FLIRTATIOUS FRENCH FARCE
Moorpark College Theatre Arts Department is proud to announce its Fall 2011 main stage production of Molière’s “The Learned Ladies” to be performed October 27-November 6, 2011. This classical French farce, featuring rhyming couplets and double entendres, offers elaborate costumes, sophisticated settings, and romantic comedy.
“The Learned Ladies” is a comic masterpiece that showcases the romantic entanglement between Henriette and Clitandre. In order to marry, they must first overcome several obstacles. Her sensible father and uncle are in favor of the marriage, but unfortunately, her father is under the thumb of his wife, Philaminte, Henriette's mother. Philaminte, supported by Henriette's aunt and sister, wishes her to marry Trissotin, a faux "scholar" and mediocre poet, who has these three women completely in his thrall. Misdirection, over-the-top pretension, and comedic verbal acrobatics transform this classic masterpiece into a whimsical evening of romance and seduction.
The specific challenges of producing a classic Molière play on the Moorpark College main stage are numerous. The actors must learn to master the language and present dialogue that is written in rhyming couplets as well as moving fluidly in elaborate period costumes. While much of the comedy is in the text, there are also comedic physical moments that will be accomplished through the use of fans for the ladies and snuff boxes for the gentlemen. “Much of the humor comes from the romantic entanglements and overt sexuality,” said Director, Suzanne Fagan. “It’s great fun watching the students explore the language and the physicality of these characters.”
In an effort to challenge students, Moorpark College Theatre Arts offers a wide variety of theatrical material. Over a two-year period, students will perform classical comedies, contemporary dramas, and musicals. “There is a tremendous benefit in offering these classical plays for the students on campus and the community at large,” said Theatre Arts Chairman, John Loprieno. “Many of our students transfer to University Theatre Arts programs. It’s our goal to provide them with a solid and diverse working knowledge of all theatrical styles and genres.”
“The Learned Ladies” will be performed on the main stage at Moorpark College on October 27, 28, 29 and November 3, 4, 5 at 8:00 p.m. with Sunday matinees on October 30 and November 6 at 2:00 p.m. Moorpark College is located at 7075 Campus Road in Moorpark, California.
