About Our Group Fitness Courses
Choosing a Course: The following descriptions can help you choose a class combining your interests with the type of fitness activity you need. The group fitness classes offered at Moorpark College focus on one or more of the basic fitness components, such as cardiovascular conditioning, muscular endurance, strength, flexibility, balance, and proprioception. Generally each class will emphasize either the cardiovascular component, or a muscular conditioning component, and some classes include a skill specific focus as well. Nearly everybody can benefit from regular vigorous activity, how much and what type of activity you need depends on your current physical condition and lifestyle. All of our classes are adaptable to varied levels of fitness and experience, and everyone is welcome. When you join one of our classes, you will have an opportunity to learn more about yourself and your potential to develop a more conditioned mind and body.
Current Course Offerings Focusing on the Cardiovascular Conditioning Component:
NEW PE M04 Rhythmic Aerobics/Cardio Dance Fitness: Introduces cardiovascular conditioning with dance-like rhythmic movements blending a variety of contemporary and global dance styles with traditional fitness practices. Specific styles introduced may vary and will reflect modern trends and themes from the fitness industry. Develops cardiovascular and muscular endurance, coordination, expressiveness, and flexibility: also reduces stress. This Cardio Dance Fitness class will be introduced in the Spring of 2010.
PE M12 Extreme Aerobic Mix: Introduces a wide variety of cardiovascular exercise formats designed to improve cardiovascular and muscular endurance, and overall body conditioning. Implements contemporary and traditional cardiovascular formats such as hi-lo, non-impact, step, and kickboxing aerobics, cardio dance, circuit training, and other popular aerobic conditioning modalities.
PE M15 Cardio Kick Boxing: Introduces cardiovascular conditioning combining elements of martial arts, boxing, and aerobics to provide overall physical conditioning and toning. Improves cardiovascular and muscular endurance, coordination, and strength. Cardio kickboxing does not involve physical contact between competitors, and may implement use of equipment such as punching bags, jump ropes, and weights.
PE M39 Nia Fusion Fitness: Introduces the classic Nia Technique, a unique fusion form of cardiovascular and muscular conditioning with simple movements from dance, martial arts, and healing arts performed to energizing music. Develops improved body awareness, coordination, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, and muscular conditioning; also, reduces stress.
Current Course Offerings Focusing on the Muscular Conditioning Component:
PE M16 Flexible Strength/Pilates Mat: Introduces students to a specific technique designed to strengthen and tone muscles, improve posture, flexibility, balance, and enhance proprioception. Movement sequences are designed to emphasize the core muscles, enhance the mind-body connection, and provide a strong foundation for any activity.
PE M18 Core Stability and Stretch: Introduces a wide variety of Concepts and physical conditioning techniques focusing on core musculature, balance, coordination, and flexibility. Includes movement skills using stability balls, functional integrated resistance exercises, basic yoga, Pilates, and other movement forms that elicit intrinsic and extrinsic core muscle conditioning, improved balance, and flexibility. Enhances posture, back comfort, body awareness, and muscular condition.
PE M35 T'ai Chi Ch'uan: Introduces students to the history, and practice of T'ai Chi Ch'uan, and its relationship to exercise, health, self-awareness, relaxation, balance, and harmony. The Yang Simplified From of 24 movement patterns will be taught.
