The Moorpark College Art Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Los Angeles artist Diane Williams.   As an immigrant from the Philippines, Williams uses her art to connect her experience with those of other immigrants in her community.   Williams salvages a variety of ethnic yarns, fabrics and recycled plastics from family, friends and local shops, which are traditionally owned, run and supported by immigrants.  The collection of these materials is an important part of her artistic process, as they carry the personal narratives of other immigrants.  These materials are then woven to create wall hangings, installations and sculptural masks.  The wall hangings in this exhibition contain words like “Immigrant,” “Alien,” “We,” and “Fear.”   Williams includes these words to reflect on and question negative social structures, and encourage greater cultural understanding.

Ms. Williams received a BFA in Drawing and Painting from CSU Long Beach.  Her work has been exhibited widely across Southern California including solo shows at the Cerritos College Gallery, Gallery 825 and Shoebox Projects. For more information visit her website, www.dianewilliamsartist.com
