Introduces beginning Spanish language in a cultural context through listening, speaking, reading and writing. Emphasizes student interaction with authentic language in cultural context.
SPAN M110 Elementary Spanish II (5 UNITS)
Prerequisites: SPAN M100, two years of high school Spanish with a grade of C or better, or equivalent
Continues beginning Spanish language acquisition in a cultural context through listening, speaking, reading and writing at the second semester level. Emphasizes student interaction with authentic language in cultural context.
SPAN M110S Spanish for Spanish Speakers (5 UNITS)
Prerequisites: SPAN M100, or two years of high school Spanish with a grade of C or better, or equivalent Spanish proficiency assessed by instructor
Develops further Spanish language skills for Spanish speakers or for students who are linguistically equivalent to a heritage speaker of Spanish. Enhances and expands reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills through the analysis of literary works and the study of advanced grammar. Analyzes historical and current events, art, culture, diversity, and literary works of Chicanx, Latinx, and Spanish writers and explores the geographical and linguistic diversities of the Spanish-speaking world. Emphasizes the value and the diversity of Hispanic cultures of all Spanish-speaking countries and the United States.

SPAN M200 Intermediate Spanish I (5 UNITS)
Prerequisites: SPAN M110, three years of high school Spanish with a grade of C or better, or equivalent
Emphasizes further practical competence and communicative skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing, through the study of Spanish-speaking cultures and literary readings. Introduces structures and strategies to express opinions and discuss some abstract topics. Furthers an increased awareness of cultural norms, values, and culturally relevant appropriate customs and events.
SPAN M200S Intermediate Spanish for Spanish Speakers I (5 UNITS)
Prerequisites: SPAN M110, SPAN M110S, 3 years of high school Spanish, or equivalent
Provides instruction of intermediate level Spanish that builds upon the existing reading, writing, speaking and listening skills and the cultural heritage and knowledge of heritage speakers. Increases awareness of linguistic registers, discussing items beyond the familiar routine. Develops an appreciation for Spanish-speaking cultures. Includes the history, culture, and current events of Spanish-speaking countries in order to develop comprehension and speaking skills.
Note: This course is entirely conducted in Spanish; The course is equivalent to SPAN M200 and is designed for heritage speakers of Spanish or other linguistically qualified students
SPAN M210Intermediate Spanish II (5 UNITS)
Prerequisites: SPAN M200, SPAN 200S, four years of high school Spanish with a grade of C or better, or equivalent
Emphasizes an awareness of cultural norms, values and culturally relevant customs and events. Expands upon culture and facilitate language acquisition through listening, speaking, reading and writing through the study of Spanish-speaking cultures and literary readings. Facilitates the expression of more complex ideas, opinions, and abstract concepts. Reviews the more complex linguistic structures and more sophisticated communicative skills.
