NIGHT BEFORE NATIONALS GOES VIRTUAL

Against all odds, the Moorpark College Forensics team won an eleventh National Title this year, with a team largely made up of students new to the team and in an entirely online environment.  This group of students proved that in spite of adversity, excellence can shine through.  On May 7th, the team showcased a small sampling of the events that paced the team to a championship.

EVENING OF DANCE – CULMINATING PROJECTS FROM THE DANCE PROGRAM

Beth Megill and Robert Salas, full-time Music faculty, along with members of the Adjunct faculty produced multiple examples of “Dance on Film” this semester.  The imagination, creativity and dexterity of Moorpark College Dance students are on display in this collection of videos  that have been staged in multiple non-traditional venues and that voice the complexity of emotions that all Moorpark College students have experienced this last year.

MUSIC TECHNOLOGY: MC DJs LIVE ON TWITCH

Music instructor, Nathan Bowen, produced two Stream Jams this Spring.  Several workshops were held with students, faculty and guest artists.  Graphics for the LIVE Twitch events were created by Music Tech student Nick Schultz.

MOORPPARK COLLEGE CHOIRS SHED NEW LIGHT IN UNEXPECTED PLACES

Under the direction of Music faculty member, Brandon Elliot, the Concert Choir’s final virtual performance for the academic year was a challenging piece to tackle virtually (it took about 65 hours of post-production work!), but it is a poignant finish to this arduous year.  Please note the photos that some students submitted of the MC campus as their “home”:

For Vocal Ensemble, they decided to end the year singing a beautiful song from the All-Night Vigil by Sergei Rachmaninoff.  They were at first disappointed that the elevator noise and construction trucks interrupted the ending, but then smiled as they realized there’s no more perfect memento as we have been singing despite those noises since October.  True professionals, the students remained unphased as they perfromed.  It captured the year perfectly.

MOORPARK COLLEGE JAZZ ENSEMBLE PERFORMS WITH MOORPARK MAYOR

Keeping up with our continued outreach and partnership with the community, the Moorpark College Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Music faculty member Brendan McMullin, performed with Moorpark’s Mayor Janice Parvin in a concert called:  “The Moorpark College Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combos With Moorpark Mayor Janice Parvin”

SPRING “MAINSTAGE” PRODUCTION OF MOLIERE’S “THE IMPOSTURES OF SCAPIN”

Director, John Loprieno, brought Moliere’s classic comedy to campus as the “mainstage” offering from Theatre Arts.  This production was captured in several formats this semester.  One full performance was filmed on campus with full COVID safety protocols in place as the cast and crews embraced multiple concepts from historic theatrical traditions incorporating performance techniques from the Commedia del ‘Arte with an assist from Beth Megill’s Dance Improvisation class as well as utilizing a full scale “Pageant Wagon” designed by Brian Koehler.  Two other full productions were produced on Zoom.

SPRING ORIGINAL STUDENT ONE ACTS

Theatre Arts Faculty member, Suzanne Fagan, produced 11 original one act plays that were written by students in the fall semester of 2020 and directed and performed by students in the spring of 2021. The writing for the majority of these pieces took place in our M21A Playwrighting I and M21B Playwrighting II classes.  The pieces were produced in our Theatre Production Performance classes, M10A-D.  The directors learned their craft in Directing I and Directing II M15A and M15B.

This semester the Theatre Arts Department collaborated with the Ventura Youth Correctional Facility in Camarillo, Calif.  Because of this, 2 of these 11 plays have been written by students at the VYCF. They have earned college credit through this collaboration as well as other valuable skills. The Theatre Arts department is excited to continue working with the incredible staff, faculty and students at the VYCF.
