Which Transfer Degrees does the Education & Teaching Area of Interest offer?
We currently have three transfer degrees:
• Early Childhood Education (CD/ECE) – Who and How to teach is primary focus (For students planning to work with ages 0-8)
• Elementary Teacher Education (EDU) – What and How to teach is primary focus (For students planning to work with ages 5-11)
• Child and Adolescent Development (CADV) – Who is the child and Why (For students planning to work with ages 0-18)
- CADV Targets students with more interest in research and interdisciplinary behavioral sciences and who do not have an interest in the teaching field or educational administration
- Sample career aspirations: developmental research, social work, school psychology, education specialist for deaf and hard of hearing students, public policy - Note: students in CD/ECE are also prepared to pursue these fields – the main difference is that CD/EDU focuses on applied developmental science and requires an experiential foundation with young children.
A few questions and points that may help a student to determine a pathway and plan
Is the student interested in teaching children between infancy and age 8, including special education and early intervention?
Recommendation: CD/ECE
• Alternatively, if the student is interested in early elementary teaching (K-2) the student could get the EDU degree incorporating 24 units of CD or the Transitional Kindergarten Certificate, but this would put the student over 60 units.
• According to Title 22, any teacher who aspires to work with infants (children under 30 months) must complete at least 3 units of Infant/Toddler coursework (CD M15). In federal programs, such as Head Start, if the teacher does not have a bachelor’s degree, then she/he needs to have 6 units of Infant-Toddler coursework.
• Also, according to Title 22, anyone who aspires to administrative positions in early care and education must have 3 units of Administration (CD 24 or CD 25)
• Also, according to Title 5, anyone who aspires to administrative positions in early care and education must have 6 units of Administration (CD 24 and CD 25)
• The CA Child Development Permit (Title 5) is currently under revision by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing, and it is anticipated that standards will become more rigorous. Current guidance recommends that all lead teachers and administrators have at least a bachelor’s degree in CD/ECE with supervised clinical experience.
Is the student interested in teaching children in upper elementary or high school or K-12 administration?
Recommendation: EDU (Although CD/ECE are equally viable options)
Is the student motivated to learn in the area of general/liberal studies and wants to enter K-12 education?
Recommendation: EDU If not, CD/ECE or CADV are better choices to promote success
Does the student need to work while earning his/her degree and want to work with children while doing so?
Recommendation: CD/ECE or CADV (with options selected of CD M03, CD M04/M04L and CD M12/M12L)
Does the student have any prior professional experience working with children? This is not babysitting or nannying.
If no, CD/ECE may be best option, or internships with children (experience with actual children is highly valued for employment in most fields)
Does the student plan to attend graduate school for a credential, master’s degree or beyond?
If no, recommend CD/ECE
