Achievement in Science, Engineering, & Mathematics (ASEM; also known as "Friends of MESA") are students in STEM majors who do not meet the eligibility requirements to be a full-fledged MESA Scholar. ASEM students can still access on-campus tutoring services, professional development workshops, advising and transfer assistance, and assistance with identifying scholarships and internship opportunities. They also enjoy access to the MESA Center.

ASEM / Friends of MESA Eligibility Requirements

Students must meet the following criteria in order to be considered for ASEM:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen, permanent resident, or Dreamer/DACA recipient; AND
  • Must not hold a bachelor’s degree in any field; AND
  • Must declare as their official major a STEM field that requires calculus; AND
  • Must intend to transfer to a four-year institution; AND
  • Must complete an educational plan (SEP) (before or after joining MESA); AND
  • Must meet either an educational criteria or a financial criteria as defined on the MESA Eligibility page; AND

How do I apply to be a Friend of MESA?

Submit a MESA Interest Form, and an MC MESA Program representative will follow up with you to inform you whether you meet the qualifications to be a MESA Scholar or a Friend of MESA. (At the very least, we will refer you to additional campus services to help you succeed in your studies at Moorpark College!)

The MESA Program will begin admitting a limited number of ASEM students in spring 2026. Contact MCMESA@vcccd.edu to learn more.
